That Woman Has No Shame!

My trusty Pocket Rocket “personal massager” is on its last legs, so my husband and I stopped in at the Hustler store last night on our way to a concert at the Roxy. We were going about our business, battery-testing vibrators with the help of a sales associate when I spotted an old high school classmate. He too was browsing the adult toys section with his girlfriend.

Some people might be mortified in this situation, but I, strangely, was not in the least. “James?” I said, and we got to chatting and catching up about mutual acquaintances. My husband was marveling at how unfazed I was, fiddling around with dildos of various shapes and sizes as I made small talk with this guy I used to take AP English with.

I have a theory on this and, like just about everything else in my life right now, it relates to being a mother. Before I was pregnant, I was pretty good about keeping my private parts private. But over the course of the last couple of years I’ve done the following: submitted myself to weekly pelvic exams, spread my legs before a team of OB-GYNs and nurses for two hours straight as I struggled to squeeze out a nine-pounder, and exposed my nipples to various nurses, lactation consultants (and let’s face it, complete strangers – curious onlookers no doubt snuck a peek here and there during the 12-month period that I was still nursing Donovan in public). None of it the least bit sexy, to be sure, but it did foster in me a newfound comfort with and acceptance of my own body.

And, come to think of it, that is pretty sexy.
